Cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography are minimally invasive procedures used to evaluate the coronary arteries and diagnose and treat coronary artery disease.

During coronary angiography, a thin catheter is introduced through an artery, usually through the wrist (radial artery) when appropriate, and advanced to the heart. Contrast material is then injected to produce detailed images of the coronary arteries and identify areas of narrowing or blockage.

Cardiac catheterization can provide important information about the severity and location of coronary artery disease and can help determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.

When significant coronary artery narrowing is identified, treatment may be performed during the same procedure when clinically appropriate. This can include coronary angioplasty and stent placement to restore blood flow to the heart muscle.

Dr. Ghassan Shawabkeh has extensive experience in diagnostic coronary angiography, transradial cardiac catheterization and complex coronary interventions, including treatment of chronic total occlusions (CTO) and heavily calcified coronary lesions.
