CORONARY STENTS
A coronary stent is a small mesh tube that is placed inside a narrowed or blocked coronary artery to help restore blood flow to the heart muscle and maintain the opening of the artery.
Stent implantation is usually performed as part of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as coronary angioplasty or cardiac catheterization.
WHEN IS A CORONARY STENT NEEDED?
A coronary stent may be recommended when a significant narrowing or blockage in a coronary artery is causing symptoms, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle, or occurring as part of an acute coronary syndrome.
The decision to implant a stent depends on the patient's symptoms, coronary anatomy, severity and location of the narrowing, evidence of ischemia and overall clinical condition.
HOW IS A CORONARY STENT INSERTED?
During coronary catheterization, a thin catheter is introduced through an artery, usually through the wrist or groin, and guided toward the coronary arteries.
Contrast dye is injected to visualize the arteries and identify the location and severity of the blockage.
When appropriate, a balloon is positioned across the narrowed segment and inflated to widen the artery. A stent mounted on the balloon is then expanded and left inside the artery to support the vessel wall and maintain blood flow.
The stent remains permanently inside the artery.
TYPES OF CORONARY STENTS
Modern coronary interventions primarily use drug-eluting stents. These stents release medication that helps reduce the risk of excessive tissue growth inside the stent and subsequent narrowing.
The choice of stent and treatment strategy depends on the patient's coronary anatomy, the characteristics of the blockage and the clinical situation.

MEDICATIONS AFTER STENT IMPLANTATION
After coronary stent implantation, patients are generally prescribed antiplatelet medications to reduce the risk of blood clot formation inside the stent.
The duration and combination of medications depend on the type of procedure, the patient's clinical condition, bleeding risk and other medical factors.
Patients should not stop prescribed antiplatelet medication without discussing it with their cardiologist.
FOLLOW-UP AFTER CORONARY STENTING
Regular follow-up after stent implantation is important to monitor symptoms, control cardiovascular risk factors and optimize medical treatment.
Patients should also focus on:

CAN A STENT BECOME NARROWED AGAIN?
Although modern drug-eluting stents have significantly reduced the risk of restenosis, narrowing can occasionally develop within or around a previously implanted stent.
Patients who develop recurrent chest pain or other concerning symptoms after stent implantation may require further evaluation, which can include non-invasive testing or coronary angiography depending on the clinical situation.
CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY AND STENTING
Coronary angioplasty and stenting are important components of modern interventional cardiology.
