TACHYCARDIA | RAPID HEARTBEAT
Tachycardia is a condition in which the heart beats faster than expected. A fast heart rate can be a normal response to exercise, stress or illness, but persistent or unexplained rapid heartbeats may be caused by a heart rhythm disorder that requires medical evaluation and treatment.
Not every episode of a fast heartbeat indicates heart disease. Identifying the underlying cause and the exact type of tachycardia is important before deciding on the appropriate treatment.
TYPES OF TACHYCARDIA
Tachycardia can originate from different areas of the heart. Common types include:
• Sinus tachycardia.
• Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
• Atrial fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response.

CAUSES OF TACHYCARDIA

• Fever and infections.
• Dehydration.
• Anemia.
• Thyroid disorders.
• Abnormal blood electrolyte levels.
• Certain medications or stimulants.

SINUS TACHYCARDIA
Sinus tachycardia is an increase in heart rate while the normal rhythm of the heart is maintained.
It may occur as a response to exercise, fever, pain, stress, dehydration or other medical conditions.
In these situations, treating the underlying cause is usually the most important step, and specific treatment for the rhythm itself may not be necessary.
SUPRAVENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA (SVT)
Supraventricular tachycardia is a rapid heart rhythm that originates above the ventricles and often causes sudden episodes of a very fast heartbeat.
The episode may start and stop suddenly and can be associated with palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath or chest discomfort.
Treatment depends on the type and frequency of the episodes and the severity of symptoms. It may include medications or catheter ablation in appropriately selected patients.
VENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA
Ventricular tachycardia is a rapid heart rhythm originating from the ventricles. It can be more serious, particularly in patients with structural heart disease, previous myocardial infarction or weakened heart muscle.
Ventricular tachycardia requires specialized medical evaluation and may require urgent treatment depending on the patient's condition.
HOW IS TACHYCARDIA DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis depends on understanding the patient's symptoms, when they occur and, whenever possible, recording the heart rhythm during an episode.
Investigations may include:
• Electrocardiogram (ECG).
• 24-hour or longer Holter monitoring.
• Extended cardiac rhythm monitoring when necessary.
• Echocardiography (Echo).
• Blood tests, including thyroid function and electrolyte levels when appropriate.
• Exercise stress testing in selected cases.
• Additional cardiac rhythm investigations when required.
THE ROLE OF HOLTER MONITORING
Episodes of tachycardia may be intermittent and may not occur during a doctor's visit or a standard ECG.
Holter monitoring continuously records the heart's electrical activity during normal daily activities. It can help detect episodes of tachycardia and determine their rate, duration and type of associated rhythm abnormality.
TREATMENT OF TACHYCARDIA
Treatment depends on the underlying cause, type of rhythm disorder, severity of symptoms and the patient's overall health.
Treatment may include:
• Treating the underlying cause, such as dehydration, anemia or thyroid disease.
• Lifestyle modification and avoidance of relevant triggers.
• Medications to control heart rate or rhythm when appropriate.
• Specific medications for certain rhythm disorders.
• Catheter ablation for selected types of tachycardia.
• Specialized cardiac devices in certain patients with serious rhythm disorders.
CATHETER ABLATION FOR TACHYCARDIA
Some patients with recurrent episodes of tachycardia may benefit from catheter ablation.
During the procedure, specialized catheters are introduced into the heart to identify the area responsible for the abnormal rhythm. An advanced ablation technique is then used to treat the abnormal electrical pathway or focus with the goal of preventing recurrent episodes.
The suitability of catheter ablation depends on the type of tachycardia, cardiac anatomy and the patient's overall clinical condition.
WHEN IS TACHYCARDIA AN EMERGENCY?
Urgent medical evaluation is required when a very rapid or persistent heartbeat occurs, particularly when it is associated with:
• Severe chest pain or pressure.
• Significant shortness of breath.
• Severe dizziness.
• Fainting.
• Sudden severe weakness or deterioration.
SPECIALIZED EVALUATION
Tachycardia is not a single diagnosis and can result from many different causes.
Accurate treatment depends on identifying the type and underlying cause of the rapid heartbeat and correlating the patient's symptoms with ECG, Holter monitoring, echocardiography and other investigations when necessary.
Each patient is assessed individually to determine whether observation, medication, catheter ablation or another specialized treatment is appropriate.
