EMERGENCY HEART ATTACK TREATMENT
A heart attack is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is suddenly reduced or completely blocked. Without rapid treatment, prolonged interruption of blood flow can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle.
WHAT IS PRIMARY PCI?
Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Primary PCI) is an emergency catheter-based procedure used to reopen a blocked coronary artery during an acute heart attack.
The procedure is performed by introducing a catheter into an artery, usually through the wrist or groin, and guiding it to the coronary arteries. The blocked artery is then treated using specialized balloons, guidewires and, when appropriate, a coronary stent to restore blood flow.
WHY IS RAPID TREATMENT IMPORTANT?
During a heart attack, every minute matters. The longer a coronary artery remains blocked, the greater the risk of permanent heart muscle damage.
Rapid diagnosis and timely restoration of blood flow can help limit the extent of heart muscle injury and reduce the risk of serious complications.
WHEN IS PRIMARY PCI NEEDED?
Primary PCI is commonly considered for patients with an acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) when an acutely blocked coronary artery is responsible for the heart attack and timely intervention can be performed.
The treatment strategy depends on the patient's symptoms, ECG findings, clinical condition, coronary anatomy and the overall medical situation.
WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK?
Common warning signs may include:
Chest pressure, tightness or pain.
Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw.
Shortness of breath.
Cold sweating.
Nausea or vomiting.
Sudden weakness, dizziness or fainting.
Some patients, particularly those with diabetes or older adults, may have less typical symptoms.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SUSPECT A HEART ATTACK?
A suspected heart attack requires immediate medical attention. Patients should seek emergency medical care without delay rather than waiting for symptoms to improve.
An ECG and urgent medical assessment are essential to determine whether an acute coronary artery blockage is present and whether emergency coronary intervention is required.
EMERGENCY CORONARY INTERVENTION
When emergency angiography confirms a blocked coronary artery responsible for the heart attack, PCI may be performed during the same emergency procedure to restore blood flow.
Depending on the coronary anatomy, treatment may include balloon angioplasty and coronary stent implantation.
